Help Desk Software Solutions

Tuesday, March 31, 2009

When starting an online business, there are many things that must be considered. First there is this concern about the web hosting; choosing the best web hosting is one of the many keys to the success of an online business. Another thing to consider is the website platform to use-- would it be dynamic or static? These things and many more must be taken cared of to ensure that the business will prosper. There is also one very important thing that is often taken for granted by some-- the help desk software to use. The help desk is as important as the hosting and the website platform you use because it is your link to the customer. If you think like a customer, you will know how frustrating it is to find it difficult to connect with the people who run an online business and get assistance from them. If your help desk performs properly and delivers what is expected of it, people will come back to your site because they can trust it. A good help desk builds trust in the customers. When the customers trust your site, they will recommend it to others.

But how will you choose the best help desk software for your site? There are websites that index different help desk software and give good information about them. One of such website is HelpDeskIndex.com, a website that has many help desk related articles and resources. They provide valuable information about different help desk software. With their help desk software review, you will learn a lot about different help desk software and would be able to choose the best help desk solution for your online business. It is here in HelpDeskIndex.com that found HESK, a very good help desk software that is based on PHP. I am now planning to use it in one of the online businesses that I am working on.

It really pays to do some research first before diving into something that entails a lot of money. One of the many reason why some online businesses fail is because they forget to see that the connection to the customer is as important as the website itself.

Deep Zoom Technology

Monday, March 30, 2009

PinoyWebSurfer left a message in my chat widget about a website that uses deep zoom technology. Deep Zoom allows you to zoom almost arbitrarily large images in Silverlight in a performant manner. With this technology, images can be displayed at very small and very large scale without affecting quality. The performance of the program that displays the image is also not affected with the zooming. I think this is good for online stores, galleries, and other special kinds of websites.

I could not put the link of the website that PinoyWebSurfer has told me about because it is an adult site :P  But for those who would like to see what Deep Zoom is all about, I searched for another site, a non-adult one that uses the Deep Zoom technology. Here it is, http://memorabilia.hardrock.com/. See the red pair of shoes in the screen shot below? When you are on the hard rock cafe site, click on that pair of shoes and just use your mouse's wheel to zoom in or out. Zoom in as much as you like with the image of the shoes, I swear you can really see the grain of the shoe's leather.

File Extension QTL Problems?

There are times when files just refuse to open. When this happens to you, the first thing that should come into your mind is the Registry. The registry is the database where all the settings and options for Windows are stored. When there is a corrupted or missing registry file, the computer may fail to work properly. Video files are the usual files that do not open sometimes. There are many types of video files and each type has a different file extension. The registry stores information about which application plays a particular video file. For example, those that have file extension QTL are associated with Quicktime. The .qtl (QuickTime Link) file extension is associated with QuickTime movie files located on a web server, and available for users to download or stream. File extension QTL has the same exact format as .mov file. You can even change the file extension qtl to .mov and still be able to play it. If you cannot open file extension qtl, probably there is a problem with your registry. The registry must always be kept clean and organized to ensure that every program works and every file loads up when called upon. Try A quick scan with Driver Detective can usually solve the problem. You can check out this software at FileExtensionQTL.com.

Photoshop Text Effects

I have been dabbling with WordPress theme creation lately and I have created a number of theme already. As of now I can only produce simple themes but I know that if I will keep at it I will be able to see improvement in my creations. The most difficult part in theme creation is in designing  header. After studying many good WordPress themes around the web, I realized that how the text in the header is handle plays a very important role in the overall beauty of the header. The header can make or break a theme. A good knowledge of creating text effects using Adobe Photoshop is also a must for anyone who designs themes. So I scoured the internet for good Photoshop text effects tutorials. Here are the ones that impressed me:

More on this in the next few posts.

How To Find The Best Web Hosting for Your Site

Sunday, March 29, 2009

So, it has finally dawned on you that owning a space in the web is one of the best things that you can do today. The internet has ceased to be just a niche technology, it has become the new mass media and now is the best time to cash in on what it has to offer. Owning a website is like owning an estate, some people has even coined the term "virtual estate" to denote to websites; for them, a website is like a real estate, something that is very valuable. Many are now thinking about starting a website, or an online business. To the novice in the filed of web hosting, finding the perfect web site hosting is not that easy. You can not just get a web hosting company and buy your self a few years worth of online presence. There are hundreds of web hosting companies out there but not all of them are really as good as how they want themselves to appear. So the best thing that someone new to web hosting can do to ensure that his first attempt at having an online presence does not end as a failure is to get the help of an expert. One such expert in this field is WebHostingGeeks.com. This site offers independent reviews of the best web hosting providers. You can read what they have in their site and you will surely learn a lot about the best web hosting companies that you can have for your website. In this site, web hosting providers are ranked by the best price-value ratio.

Two New Features Added to Google SERP

Have you noticed some changes in the Google SERP lately? Google has announced in its blog that they have added two new features to the Google SERP. The first feature added is the expanded list of useful related searches. The second is the addition of longer search result descriptions. Here's what Google said:

Starting today, we're deploying a new technology that can better understand associations and concepts related to your search, and one of its first applications lets us offer you even more useful related searches (the terms found at the bottom, and sometimes at the top, of the search results page).

For example, if you search for [principles of physics], our algorithms understand that "angular momentum," "special relativity," "big bang" and "quantum mechanic" are related terms that could help you find what you need. Here's an example (click on the images in the post to view them larger):

According to Google, they are deploying a new technology that could target more queries, more languages, and make suggestions more relevant to what users are looking for. Google has been talking about intent-based search and I guess this is a sign that they are now into it.

"Additionally, we're now offering refinements for longer queries — something that's usually a challenging task," Google says in the Google blog.

Driver Problems?

Friday, March 27, 2009

Most computer users do not know about device drivers because they do not really see these in action; device drivers or software drivers work in the background. The drivers in your computer are as important as the hardware and the many important software you know about. A driver communicates with the device through the computer bus or communications subsystem to which the hardware is connected. In layman's term, a driver is the bridge that connects the hardware and the software. But because drivers work in the background, most computer user do not know about them. The only get to know about drivers when problems arise like a new printer refusing to be "seen" by the computer, or a digital camera whose existence is ignored by the PC.

If you have just upgraded your system and see that many of the external devices connected to your PC fail to work, your problem could be with your drivers. There is a website that you can run to in times like this, DriversSoftware.com. This website has over 3000 companies and 300,000 drivers listings. That's a lot in a list and I guess they have almost all the drivers imaginable that could solve your driver woes. To check if your drivers are up to date and that there are no driver problems in your system, you can make use of their free online scan.

Youtube's Upload Status Bar (Part 2)

I have posted about the "missing" upload status bar in Youtube a few days back and told my piece about how important that feature is. A while ago, I started a video upload to Youtube and was surprised to see the upload status bar. I also noticed that the upload now seemed faster. I guess the reason why Youtube removed that feature a few months back is because they did not want users to see how slow the upload process could take. Now, probably they have improved the upload system and they are now proud to show us the upload status bar.

File Extension Problems?

Every now and then we experience problems like conflicts with file extensions. To the techie ones this is not a big deal but for the regular computer users file extension problems are quit intimidating and could look very complicated. Almost all of the file extension problems we encounter can be traced back to the registry. The Windows registry is a database where all the settings and options for the Microsoft Windows operating systems are stored. If you suddenly could not open a file with a particular extension, it could be that there is no program in your computer that could run it or (the more likely culprit) it is just that the registry is somewhat muddled. You can have the software that can open that particular file but the registry loses the information that tells it which file extension goes with which program. When this happens, the file won't open. This kind of problem is not that difficult for me to solve, I am quite confident with my knowledge about things like this but to the regular computer user this could be frustrating. But worry not, there's a good software that can help you with your file extension problems. It is free, check out RegistryFileExtension.com and solve your file extension problems with their free file extension device.

Perform Multiple Actions Automatically In Windows with WinMacro

If you are using Mac don't bother reading this.

If like me you frequently do the same set of actions or commands again and again in your daily job, you'd be happy to meet WinMacro, a free software that monitors your mouse and keyboard events, then play them for you. With this software you can automate tasks that you perform repetitively in your job daily. To use WinMacro, the first thing to do is of course download it. It is totally free. When it's already in your machine you can run it and type a filename to record. This file will be saved in the same directory where WinMacro is located. You can then click “Record” button to start recording. Press the Pause/Break key to stop recording. You can also use Ctrl+Esc or Ctrl+Alt+Del it you like. To playback a recorded action, browse to select an existing file. Click “Playback” to playback from the file and WinMacro will minimize itself to the taskbar and starts playing back events from the file. After playback is over, WinMacro pops a message box indicating “Playback Over”. To interrupt playback midway, press Ctrl+Esc or Ctrl+Alt+Del.

Ronseal Power Sprayer

Thursday, March 26, 2009

I have been looking for a quick and easy way to treat our old fence. I have been thinking about it in the last few weeks but hasn't really put some time for it because of my busy schedule. But summer is here and this is the best time to do things like treating fences. I'll be having some free time in the next few weeks, so I could do something for that fence. So I surfed the net for a power sprayer that can do the job quickly and easily. It did not take long for me to come upon a very good Fence Sprayer. Ronseal Power Sprayer is cordless and battery operated so it is really very easy to use, not cumbersome like the wired ones. It has the power keep going for up to 40 fence panels. Its motor can deliver a uniform and consistent pressure that gives accurate coverage. So I will retire the brush and instead use this technologically advanced tool to treat those fences.

The Conficker Virus

Computer security groups around the world are now working together to defeat the Conficker virus. The malicious program which is also known as Downadup or Kido was first discovered in October 2008 and has infected more than nine million computers running the Windows operating system around the world. What it does is not that scary, it just turns your infected machine into a botnet. This program is built in a way that after it infects your computer, it can be programmed remotely by software to serve as a vast system for distributing spam or other malware. The author of this virus also has administrative control of your infected machine. So far, the virus hasn't caused real damage aside from preventing computer users from installing Windows updates and anti-virus software that can remove the virus. What is scary is that the virus' ability to launch a second stage, downloading additional code that could hijack computers completely, steal personal information and everything that you'd not rather share with hackers.

How do you know if your machine is infected with this virus? It is really difficult to tell because your computer may not show any symptoms of the infection. In some cases the signs could be the following :

Account lockout policies are being tripped.
Automatic Updates, Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS), Windows Defender, and Error Reporting Services are disabled.
Domain controllers respond slowly to client requests.
The network is congested.
Various security-related Web sites cannot be accessed.

Of course this virus can be defeated. BitDefender has a tool for removing Conficker. Microsoft also has offered some information and solutions.

Gmail's Undo Send

Yes, Google makes it possible for you to retrieve a mail that was sent by mistake. "This feature can't pull back an email that's already gone; it just holds your message for five seconds so you have a chance to hit the panic button. And don't worry - if you close Gmail or your browser crashes in those few seconds, we'll still send your message," said Gmail user experience designer, Michael Leggett. To add this feature, "turn on Undo Send in Gmail Labs under Settings, and you'll see a new 'Undo' link on every sent mail confirmation. Click 'Undo,' and we'll grab the message before it's sent and take you right back to compose."

Firefox 3.1 beta 3

Firefox 3.1 beta 3 is now available for download. I have just installed it and I have yet to see what are the new thing in it. One thing I've noticed immediately is that it seems faster than the previous version of Firefox I was using yesterday. According to the release notes, the improvements in this new version are as follows: faster Javascript with Tracemonkey, improved private browsing, faster rendering, and native JSON support. Another noticeable improvement is the new look of the "new tab" button.

I could not say as of now which is faster, Chrome or this one. I will have my say on it in a few days.

North Carolina Furniture

Wednesday, March 11, 2009

My cousin, who is now based in North Carolina emailed me last week to ask for my help. Her email goes like this: "...I know that you are good at finding things on the web, I guess you can help me find the best furniture store, something that sells affordable yet good quality furniture. I am on the process of furnishing my new home here in...". I told her "What? You live there so you must be more knowledgeable in finding that particular store". But anyway, I helped her out because I know that she's among those who do not really know that search engines are there to help us out. So I searched for the term "discount furniture north carolina". The search engine pointed me to North Carolina Furniture which proved to be a very good site to visit if you are looking for furniture in North Carolina or even if you are not particularly in North Carolina. After looking around in their site I learned that their customer service is award-winning. Aside from that they also offer high quality furniture at unbelievably low prices. I guess people looking for furniture shoud check this site out.

Google's Interest-based Advertising

Google has launched a beta testing of its "interest-based" advertising for its partner sites and on YouTube. What does it mean? It means that Google will be serving ads according to the user's browsing history. It means that the ads shown in one site for one user will not be the same as what is shown to another. It seems like everyone is pushing for personalization. Here is what Google said in its blog:

- Transparency - We already clearly label most of the ads provided by Google on the AdSense partner network and on YouTube. You can click on the labels to get more information about how we serve ads, and the information we use to show you ads. This year we will expand the range of ad formats and publishers that display labels that provide a way to learn more and make choices about Google's ad serving.

- Choice - We have built a tool called Ads Preferences Manager, which lets you view, delete, or add interest categories associated with your browser so that you can receive ads that are more interesting to you.

- Control - You can always opt out of the advertising cookie for the AdSense partner network here. To make sure that your opt-out decision is respected (and isn't deleted if you clear the cookies from your browser), we have designed a plug-in for your browser that maintains your opt-out choice.

We can expect that interest-based advertising will be in full bloom in the next several months.

The Experts in Precision Wire Bond

There is no doubt that technology has made our lives many folds easier. The advancement in the field of electronics probably has the greatest impact in our lives; it has changed the way we live, the way we see and do things. Because of electronics, what was impossible two or three decades ago looks so simple now, thanks to technology. Many Twitter users love retweeting great articles or comments. It is often that Twitter users request for a retweet of some very good tweets. Now, a new tool has come up to make retweeting very simple. This new tool is Please Retweet Me, which works by adding a special link to the end of any tweet that, when clicked, will automatically fill in all of the information needed to retweet. It is easy to use all you need to do is just type in what you want to have retweeted and Please Retweet Me will send out a tweet with a link at the end to pleaseRT.me.

Movies Planet

I love movies, who doesn't? I am not exactly a movie buff but I take watching movies seriously. I also have my little collection of movies, titles that I know most of you haven't heard about. One of the many reasons why I love the internet is the fact that it is also a very good source of movies. I and my wife watch movies three to four nights a week. But we do not go out to the movie theater to watch movies, we watch them at home, in our computer. I always roam around the internet to discover new sources of movies, we also love watching movies online. Lately I came upon MoviesPlanet, a website for people who love movies. It is actually a movie lovers social network, it allows members to download free movies or just watch them online. And it's not just movies that are in their movie database, they also have the latest full episodes of our favorite tv shows. They have probably thousands of movie titles and TV show episodes in their movie database but it is quite easy to look for that particular movie title you are looking for because their site has a quick movie/ TV link search. Members can also create their own customer user profile to rate films. If you are member you can also contact other members who share the same favorite movies and actors. I am really impressed with the site's ability to allow users to browse movie pages and full actor biographies, read movie news, and many other important actions that any movie lover wants (because a true movie lovers are not only interested about watching the movie, they also want to know about the background of the movie, and things that happen to their favorite actors outside the screen). Thy also have a miscellaneous section where members can download applications that are essential in making movie watching a true experience. And if a member wants more, like a list of private FTP servers listed by Movies Planet's users, the site has more than 400 of it in their list. Members can also make requests of movies they would like to watch or download, I checked out the section for personal movie and video requests and found out that there are more than 6,000 entries there. With all these features and much much more, I think MoviesPlanet.com is a true movie buff's paradise.

Google Chrome Now Comes Bundled with RealPlayer

Google is hell-bent on getting Chrome off the 1.15% market share in the browser arena. The browser is being promoted heavily by Google and one of its new ways of doing it is by bundling it with RealPlayer. If you have installed a new version of RealPlayer lately, you know that during installation of the media player it also offers to install Chrome. There' no reason why Google won't do this, we know that this is common practice among software brands, for example we know that Yahoo! toolbar comes bundled with many kinds of software.

I don't know why Chrome could not get bigger following despite the heavy promotion, it's a very good browser and you can do more with it. Since it came out last year it has become my main browser. I only use two browsers, Firefox and Chrome. But I use Chrome more these days. Probably the reason why many people are still stuck with IE is because they are not keen about trying out new things, they are afraid to get out of their comfort zone. They feel comfortable using IE despite its slow-footedness  because they've been using it in the last 10 years and using a new browser is intimidating.

The internet is full of opportunities and starting a blog or a website is a very good way to make the most out of what the Internet has to offer. New Stats Reveal that Searchers are Now Making Longer Search Queries

The way people do searches now is quite different from how they do it in the past years. The search queries that searchers make now are longer, this was mentioned in SMX West session recently which was entitled 'Latest Stats About The Search Engines'. According to Bill Tancer from Hitwise, the average query length to the search engines has been rising. Queries of 5 words or more have increased at a year over year rate of 10%, while single word queries dropped 3%. Because of this, "search engine success" (the statistic that measures how successful search engines are at delivering relevant results for the user query) has dropped. What is the implication of this? Users are expecting more out of the search engines, they expect the search engine to do more than just the indexing of data, they expect that search engines process the data on the internet. It seems that people think that the more words they put in a query, the better is the chance of getting what they are looking for.  well, this development will surely have a big effect on search engine optimization.

Dangerous Adobe Acrobat Bug

If you are running Adobe Acrobat version 7 or later, you are in danger of being exposed to malware infection even if you never actually opened an infected file. There's an unpatched bug in Adobe Acrobat that allows some specially-made PDF  to crash Acrobat and inject its own code into your system and install a malware. This bug has been known for some weeks already (and some exploits using this bug  has been reported) but Adobe has not yet released a patch that will fix this.  What makes this bug very dangerous is the fact that it can trigger a malware infection even if you do not open a pdf file. The best thing to do now is to completely uninstall Adobe Acrobat an wait for the patch before using it again.

The video above demonstrates the exploit.

Premium Papers

Wednesday, March 4, 2009

I know how it is to be a student, I've been there. What I hated most when I was a student was the term paper. Yes, it was such a hassle and I never liked the idea of being forced to spend many sleepless nights just to do some research on something that I was not really interested in. I know that it is also like that for many students today. I also know that many of you would like to have some sort of one stop solution to this kind of thing. Well, the internet is a one stop solution to almost any problem in the world (that is if you know where to look for the answers). Now here's one solution for your term paper or essay problems: there's a site where you can find free essay writers, a site that offers custom essays and term papers samples writing services. This site is Premium-Papers.com. They can write your assignments in three to twelve hours. Their writers are from the United Kingdom and are really experienced in the field of research and term paper writing. And you can be assured that what they deliver are free from plagiarism. Directory Submission Service

You are not a blogger or a webmaster if you do not know that search engines like Google, Yahoo! and MSN see the number of incoming links pointing to your site as an essential factor in the ranking of your site. This is the reason why most of us bloggers want to exchange links with other bloggers; we hope to get many inbound links. But reciprocal links are not as valuable as those links that are made naturally, links that are one way. So you are now wondering how on earth would you get one way links pointing to your site? One thing you can do is keep on posting good content that other people would love to mention in their own posts, making it necessary for them to link to your post. But it takes more hours of work to get more than three good content into your pages each week. So what is one solution to this? You need a good directory submission service that will submit your website or blog to web diectories. You can do the directory submission task yourself but you'll need a lot of hours to achieve this, it could take you a lot of months to finish submitting your site to a good number of directories. Why waste your time doing it manually when you can get the service of some companies who can do it better? DirectoryMaximizer.com is a site that offers this kind of service. They can submit your site to 100 directories each month for 12 months. You can also opt to have them submit your site slowly over a period of 5 weeks at no extra cost. How Not To Pay For Antivirus Software and Still Get Protection (Part 1)

New viruses and malwares come everyday and we do not want any of them get through our protection. But good protection entails money and in this time of financial crisis it feels so heavy on our part to shell out some extra bucks for antivirus software. There is a way to get good protection without paying for antivirus software. I am not implying that we go to torrent and warez site to get bootlegged and cracked copies of these expensive antivirus software. Bootlegged copies of your popular antivirus software are 99% laden with malware so don't even try downloading them. So how can we get good protection without actually buying one? Easy, all you need to know is where to get free antivirus software. There are many good free antivirus software. I have a list of free but reliable antivirus software below :

1. Avast Home Free. This is available free of charge for non-commercial home use only. I have personally used this software and I can say that it is at par with most paid antivirus software. You'll are free to use this for 60 days. Two months of good protection can save you a lot of money.

2. AVG Free. This is basic antivirus and antispyware protection for Windows available to download for free. Limited features, no support, for private and non-commercial use only. It's good for home use. This is also very light.

3. Avira Antivir. This is the third most popular free antivirus but it doesn't mean to say that this is less effective than Avast Home Free or AVG Free. Avira is very light on your system resources and is fast and relatively accurate in scanning for viruses and malware.

4. Bit Defender. I am now using Bit Defender but not the free version; I have Bit Defender Total Security 2009. But I didn't pay for it, I was lucky enough to get a legit serial number that BitDefender gave away to a number of people last December. The serial number is good for six months of excellent protection. The free version of Bit Defender is not as good as the paid version though, but still it gives what you are looking for--protection.

I can list at least 10 free but good antivirus software for you but the four that I have listed here are good enough for now. One thing more though, if you want to get the latest version of the best antivirus software around, why not be go for beta versions and release candidates? Yes, you may want to get the latest Eset Smart Security Release candidate and get up to 6 months of good protection. You can also try becoming a beta tester for Bit defender, just check it out here. More on this in the next few posts :)
