Trying Out Apple's Safari Browser

I have heard about Safari for Windows but I did not really care to try it because I felt that Firefox was good enough for me. But a while ago, while blog hopping, I was prompted by a dialog box that suddenly popped up to allow Apple updates to be downloaded and installed in my PC. I saw that among the software to be downloaded was Safari. I cancelled the Safari download but downloaded the important Apple update. While downloading the update I suddenly got curious about Safari so I took a quick visit to the Apple website. The power of the words written on the Apple webpage promoting the power of Safari got into me so I decided to download the software and try it to see if it is really "the fastest browser on any platform". 

After downloading I immediately installed it. It took longer than I expected to finish the installation process. After installation was completed, I was informed by a message box that a reboot was needed. After restarting my machine I immediately launched Safari. The look and feel of it is like a cross between Firefox 3 and IE7. If you are used to Firefox you will not get lost in Safari. If you love IE you will also feel comfortable with the look and feel of Safari. How about the speed? If Safari is faster than Firefox I did not notice it. If there was a difference it was negligible, not unless a fraction of a second could really matter to you. Yes it loads fast, but faster than Firefox I could not really tell. Faster than IE probably. 

I saw that most of the features you can find in Firefox and IE are also available in Safari like tabbed browsing, bookmark, pop up ad blocker, as-you-type-text search, and spell-checking in text entry field. I have yet to see more features as I continue to use this browser. I am typing this review using Safari. In the next few days I would be able to post a deeper review about this browser. As of now I could say that I could use this browser. 

There is only one thing that I do not like about Safari : the texts do not look as crisp as the way they do in Firefox and IE. This is the first thing I've notice when I launched the browser the very first time.

iLASIK in NASA and U.S. Military

NASA and the U.S military are two agencies that set very high standards for the technology that they use. Anything that comes into them, whether its a gadget, software, service or equipment, is a work of technological wonder. But it is not only in the gadgets and equipment that NASA and the US military seek to get the best, they also work hard to increase the performance of their personnel. They know that the best gadgets would not work well when handled by personnel hindered by some limitations. Good eyesight is a must for mission-critical personnel at NASA and the US military. The U.S department of Defense and NASA has tapped iLASIK to improve the vision of their specialized personnel who are exposed to extreme conditions that are physically demanding. iLASIK is a form of LASIK technology that uses two lasers instead of one (the earlier version of this procedure uses only one laser). How it's done? First, the unique characteristics of the individual’s eyes are mapped using wave-front technology. Then, a corneal flap is created by an ultra-fast, computer-guided laser. This procedure is exceptionally safer than the earlier forms of LASIK which uses a hand-held microkeratome blade. The wave-front mapping data guides a second laser for vision correction after the flap is created. The combination of these advanced laser technologies creates a custom-fit procedure clinically proven to provide excellent safety and visual results.

iLASIK showed notable results in the 100 naval aviators who undergone the procedure, 95% achieved 20/20 uncorrected vision or better. All of those who undergone the procedure also recommend the surgery to other naval aviators.


LASIK technology is important, it opens our eyes to new and better ways of seeing things that enhance our performance in our chosen field.

I Can Now Access PPP and Socialspark

At last, after more or less 48 hours of not being able to access Payperpost and Socialspark, I can again log in to my accounts at the SS and PPP. I hope all those who experienced the same problem that I had the past two days are also able to access the two site by now :)

PPP and SocialSpark, Suffering from DDOS Attack

I could not access my accounts at Payperpost and Socialspark. I could not access any of Izea's websites. When I type Socialspark's URL in the address bar and hit enter my browser will just tell me that "Server at Socialspark could not be Found". The same thing happens when I do it with Payperpost or any of the pages related to Izea network. This problem started two days ago. At first I thought that Socialspark or the Izea network is really down but when I saw that other bloggers I know were posting sponsored posts coming from Socialspark on that day, I realized that Socialspark is up and it is only in my end that there is a problem. I also received e-mails from Socialspark informing me about friendship requests and a reservation for an opp, so it is really only me who could not acces them. I also checked with Berry about her Socialspark account and she told me that nothing is happening except that she can't access Payperpost website. At this time something was already playing in my mind; my IP address is being barred from accessing Socialspark. So to take a closer look at the problem I had no other choice but to make Socialspark's firewall see me as not me in order for me to be let in. So I did it and I was able to log in. Once in I immediately sent a ticket explaining my problem. That was last night and so far I haven't received any reply yet. I know that my ip address is somehow being barred from accessing everything that is Izea. I want to know why. This morning I stumbled upon the explanation. Payperpost and Izea network is suffering from a DDOS attack.

For those who are not familiar with DDOS attack, it means Distributed Denial Of Service attack. The main purpose of the one doing the DDOS attack is to put down a site. In order for my mommy blogger friends to understand what DDOS is all about, I will use layman's terms as much as possible to explain it. The idea is to flood the target website with fake requests until it can no longer handle the flood and shut down. How do these script kiddies do it? They make thousands or more computers as their "bots" or "zombie" to do simultaneous requests on the target website. Your computer could be one of those, you could be part of the attack without even knowing it. When you open a spam e-mail with attachments, you face the danger of having your computer installed with a malicious software that could turn your computer into a slave, a "bot", that will do whatever it is told to do by the owner of the malicious software.

I know that bloggers like me who want to earn extra cash from blogging could not help but open all their e-mail, even those that go to the spam box. I open almost every mail because I could not remember all the sign ups I made (which is kind of stupid of me in view of my experience with computers and the internet). My machine could have been part of a DDOS attack on Socialspark or Payperpost that is why my i.p. address is not allowed by Izea's firewall to access their websites. That is the explanation why i could not access Socialspark and Payperpost. Or it could be that they are filtering out a range of i.p. addresses suspected of carrying out the DDOS attack and my i.p address happens to fall under that range.

All I could do now is to wait for this to be resolved. I am hoping that this would be resolved soon. My opps will melt away if this will go on for long :(

Bet Your Sushi

Screenlife Games is coming out with a new DVD game that is based on the hit comedy betting gameshow, Banzai. If you are familiar with the TV show and have enjoyed it a lot, I know that you would be interested in this new DVD game which is also named Banzai. After learning about this new game I visited its website and enjoyed playing with the Tako-gotchi there. I also downloaded a wallpaper from them that really made my desktop look wacky. Just take a look at the image below, that's the one I downloaded.

This game is easy to play and it can be played with your buddies or even your family at home. It is so fun, what with sushi as your betting pieces. But if you do not have sushi don't worry, the DVD game pack comes with plastic sushis designed to be the betting pieces for the game. But of course if you have real sushi, it would be much fun. Players use chopsticks to transfer four different kinds of funny sushi characters into the "community betting bowl". The player who successfully moves the most sushi in that round has the chance to put down a numbered or lettered betting card in conjunction with the "Banzai" clip in the hopes of getting it right and winning all the sushi in the community bowl. Of course, the player who gets the most sushi is the winner.

Another One of My New Blogs

I have a new blog, I named it Violet Moon. This blog will be the repository of my little and big digital artworks. I like fooling around with graphics software. Among my favorites are Adobe Photoshop, KoolMoves, Anim8or, 3D Studio Max, Cinema 4D, Adobe Illustrator and Adobe InDesign. I need a space where I could put my little digital creations so I started this blog. I am also encouraging my wife to fiddle away with graphics so you will also see some of her works here every now and then.

I am also into digital music creation so sometimes I may feel like putting some of my music here. I chose the name Violet Moon because it sounds good to me and suggests a journey to another time or another world. For me digital art creation is a journey to a different time and world, a world that can only live in the mind of the artist. I want to share this world with others.

Seafood Cook-off

I love cooking as much as I love eating. Cooking for me is a form of art and eating is like enjoying a work of art. Although I know how to invent dishes out of the blue, I still love looking at other people's recipes for inspiration. I do not copy ingredient for ingredient, or process for process. I modify, I rearrange, i adjust things up to suit my imagination and my fancy. A while ago I stumbled upon www.GreatAmericanSeafoodCookOff.com, a website that showcases chefs and their dishes. What's good about this site is that they focus on domestic and sustainable seafood recipes. I learned that the site has a People’s Choice Recipe Contest. In this year's contest, visitors to the site could vote for the dish they like out of the five that are there. These five dishes are the creations of the top five chefs who are the finalists in this contest. The chefs used domestic seafoods to come up with such great dishes. I am also for the use of domestic seafood because it ensures freshness and great taste. The chefs in this cook off come from the different States. By voting you can have the chance to win a trip to New Orleans.

Among the five dishes what got me was the one created by Chef Paul Anders of Colorado. His dish, Colorado Striped Bass Panzanella appealed to me because most of the ingredients are easy to find and if i could not find some of them, it would be quiet easy to use other ingredients to stand in for them. The dish is obviously delicious, what with fresh vegetables to enhance the taste of the Colorado Striped Bass. Of Losers and Politicians

I know that this a break from the usual techie stuff I love posting in this blog. I just need to put this here to let out some steam. This is for my fellow Filipinos. But if you are not a Filipino I am not barring you from reading this.

Among the big losers in the Beijing Olympics is the Philippines. Zero medals so far, and only a day left in the games. The performance of a country in sports is a reflection of how it is governed by its officials. The Olympic Games is where nations show off how good they are as nations. Good leaders make good nations. Poor leaders make poor nations. Nations who perform poorly in the Olympic Games are nations with poor leadership. Poor performance in the games is a sign that a country is poor--economically and politically. The Olympic Games is not only about sports, it is about politics and economy. Countries with good economy could train and send off to the Olympic Games medal-winning athletes. China is flexing its muscles and showing to the world that it is becoming the new superpower. The way it wins medals over the present superpower (the USA) gives us a glimpse of how it will perform as a giant nation in the near future. There is no stopping the rise of China.

How about the Philippines? How will we perform as a nation in the near future? If our leaders continue the way as they are now, our journey down the drain will continue to gain momentum. It would be a hell of a ride down.

In the world of sports the Philippines is not that poor. We have our Manny Pacquiao, we have our Efren "The Magician" Reyes, we have our Alex "The Lion" Pagulayan, we have Rafael "Paeng"Nepomuceno and many more. Many Filipinos have proven time and again that we could excel in sports. But when we look at the above mentioned names we see that the Philippine government has nothing to do with how these great atheles started out. Manny Pacquiao started out on his own. Despite his poverty he struggled on his own to reach the top. When he reached the top many government officials were quick to share with him the stage and the spotlight and his truimph has become their triumph too. It is also like that with the other professional atheles we have. They start out on their own without any support from the government, when they win the glory, the government rides along with them and bask in the limelight of success.

But look at how our atheletes performed in the Beijing Olympics. Developing team atheles into medal-eating machines is the responsibility of the government. The government's system really sucks. We should look at how we find athletes in the first place and how we treat them when we have found them. It takes a lot of money and pure sincerity to develop real athletes who could compete well with atheletes of other nations.

A country's performance in sports could tell so much about a country. Our performance in the Beijing Olympics reflects the performance of our government officials as leaders of this nation. The 2010 elections is nearing but I could not see the light. I could not see any hope in the trite promises of those who are eyeing for the highest positon in the land come 2010. They are traditional politicians trying to package themselves as "new". Traditional politicians suck.

Am I A Nut Case?

Nuttiness is in the eye of the beholder. Each of us has a standard for what's nutty and what's not but there are those actions that fall on the gray area between the normal and the crazy, we could not really decide if they are crazy or not. And when we are in that situation, when we could not decide whether an action is crazy or not, we get the feeling that we're nuts. That's how I feel. There was a time in my life when I really got concerned about some of my patterns of behavior that I often catch my self talking to the person staring back at me on the mirror, asking him this question : Are You Normal or Nuts? . He usually answers, "I am normally nuts".

Being nuts is fun. I enjoy being nuts, it makes life more exciting. It's exciting as long as people around you do not notice it. But what if they begin noticing it? Things will get more exciting the moment they start noticing it. But what makes it really crazy is when they begin to show signs that you have infected them with your craziness and act as crazy as you. That's what we call collective insanity. I stumbled upon an article from Reader's Digest about other people's quirks. I quickly compared my "odd" behaviors to those that are mentioned in the article and found out that I am not the only one in the world who is nutty. The last quirk mentioned in the article mirrors one of my own quirks in a way. I won't tell you what it is, just read the article and see if some or all of the "eccentricities" there are like yours. After reading the article face the mirror and ask that person who stares back at you this question : Are You Normal or Nuts?

Being a little nuts is normal. If your nuttiness brings a smile on other people then see it as a gift. Making people smile or laugh is something that others could not do. If you can do it your nutty way then be grateful for it.

My First Real Money From RevResponse

When I opened my Hotmail inbox early this morning, I immediately noticed one mail among the usual many many emails I receive everyday. It sort of jumped out from the ranks of mails because of its title. The title says : NetLine Corporation has just sent you $50.00 USD with PayPal‏ . NetLine Corporation? I could not place the name. Why would they send me $50? Then it sunk in, the money is from RevResponse. Yes! I finally got my first money from them. I joined a few months ago with their program and just placed their widgets in my blogs and sort of forgot about it. Now here's money from them.

If you type about:config into the address bar you'll get access to these "hidden" knobs that you can turn here and there o get the desired outcome. But this is intimidating to the average computer user. That is why there is Firetune, it does the work for you by editing the settings to maximize your browsing speed depending on your Internet connection speed and your CPU speed. It also restores changes if you don’t like them.

A Free Rat-Sniffing Tool From Google

Google has released its free Ratproxy. This semi-automated, largely passive web application security audit tool is for those who want to test the security of their Web-based apps, like cross-site scripting attacks. Michal Zalewski, Google's security expert, wrote on the company’s security blog that Google’s information security engineering team developed the open-source Ratproxy to “transparently analyze legitimate, browser-driven interactions with a tested Web property and automatically pinpoint, annotate, and prioritize potential flaws or areas of concern.” Ratproxy is licensed under Apache 2.0, though “the proxy is designed solely to highlight interesting patterns in Web applications.” Is this a suggestion that you must have your own people to interpret the results?

Apple Orders 50 Million NAND Chips from Samsung

Apple reportedly ordered 50 million 8GB NAND chips from Samsung's memory division in early July. There are rumors that the chips will be in the new iPhone 3G models. Samsung, according to Digitimes, has told its lesser customers that it plans to reduce NAND chip supplies starting July. Is this a sign that the rumors that iPhone 3G and iPod will soon be gifted with the ability to remotely control a user's iTunes library in the home will be realized?

I use Firefox all the time because it is the coolest browser in the world for me. Firefox is great right out of the box but do you know that aside from adding extensions you can make it even greater? If we take a look at what is under its coat, we will see a lot of things that could greatly increase the pleasure of using this very good browser. Here are 10 tweaks and tricks that could make your Firefox experience more fiery.

1. I think this first trick is something that is not really known to half the world, or if it is known to everyone, people just do not realize how cool this somewhat hidden tool is. If there is a particular search you use a lot this tool comes handy. Right-click on the search box, select “Add a Keyword for this search”, give the keyword a name and an easy-to-type and easy-to-remember shortcut name (let’s say “guitar”) and save it. Now, when you want to do a guitar search, go to Firefox’s address bar, type “guitar” and the brand name of a particular line of guitars, say Fender or Ibanez, and hit enter. You'll have instant search. Try this now.

2. Now, If you want more screen space, you can make your icons smaller. Go to View>Toolbars>Customize and check the “Use small icons” box as shown in the image below.

3. Cool keyboard shortcuts. Master these shortcuts and you'll become a Firefox ninja:

Extract Images from PDF Files without Using Copy and Paste

Yes, the good old reliable "Print Screen" button is within reach but when you need to copy multiple images from a PDF file, doing screen captures could be too time consuming because each captured image needs to be processed in an image editor. Enter the free solution : PDF Image Extract. The name of this free app says it all, it will save every single image in the PDF file. Cool ha?

But nothing's perfect. When you save "every image" from a PDF file, you will likely end up with many many images in a folder and you'll have to look for the images that you want among the hundreds in the folder.

Little Buggy Things

Here are some crazy things about Windows XP and Vista:

Nobody can create a folder anywhere on the computer which can be named as CON.
Try it now and I am sure you will not be able to create a folder with that name.

Here is the explanation: in Windows, the folder name and the special system variables share the same interface, so when you create a folder with a system variable name it will consider that folder already exist!! these special system variables are available irrespective of path. You cannot create a folder with these names also: CON, NUL, COM1, COM2, COM3, LPT1, LPT2, LPT3,COM1 to COM9 and LPT1 to LPT9....CON means console, COM1 means serial port 1, LPT1 means parallel port 1

Here's another one : At Microsoft the whole Team, including Bill Gates, couldn't answer why this happened! Try this out:

Open Microsoft Word and type =rand (200, 99) and then press ENTER. You may copy and paste the characters I've yellowed out and paste it on MS Word and then hit enter. See what happens.

Things to Check First When your PC Misbehaves

When your PC behaves badly, don't panic, just relax, because the problem could be very easy to solve. Here are some simple things that you could do before kicking off to a long trobleshooting session that could take a lot from your precious time:

See if your PC's AVR is turned on. Sometimes we forget to do the simplest of things and when our machine won't power up we panic and think that it has been damaged during your last session with it.

See if all the cables are connected. Simple things like loose connection could cause us splitting headaches especially if we are catching up with a deadline. I remember how years ago my day was broken by a loose connection. It took me a long time to trobleshoot a malfunctioning printer when the problem was just a loose connection.

See if all peripherals are turned on. A powered-off print server coul prevent your printer from working.

Check the Device Manager. Does the device manager display any problem? Red Xs indicate malfunctioning or disabled divices.

Check drivers.Is there a new driver? Updating your driver could solve problems. If there are new drivers available, try reinstalling some drivers.

Take a look at your newly installed updates. Have you installed a new update to one of the softwares you are using? Some updates and patches released by software publishers could sometimes cause problems.

Doing the above things first could save you a lot of time. So the next time your PC misbehaves, don't panic, just relax and remeber this post :)
