Mozilla Labs has been working on Bispen, a new open-source project that would give developers the ability to edit local or remote code via a Web browser. This Web-based programming environment will combine the speed and power of desktop-based development with the collaborative benefits of cloud computing.  Now Mozilla Labs has unvieled Bespin 0.1 and announced that it is only an "initial prototype framework that includes support for basic editing features,we're particularly excited by the prospect of empowering Web developers to hack on the editor itself and make it their own."

Bispen is a "cloud editor" and we know that this is not the first of its kind, but check out the video above and see what makes it different from other cloud code editors.

Something's Wrong with my ISP

Monday, February 23, 2009

There is something wrong with my ISP, I could not access the internet except those pages that are under Google like the Google search engine, Blogger, and my Google Apps. Other pages do not load. So I could not check my Hotmail email, PPP, Social Spark, and all those money makers :(

I have checked around and it is not only me who is experiencing this, other people in my area are also having this problem. Same here in the office, only everything Google is accessible, others are not. I hope this problem would be resolved soon by my ISP.

Use Your Own Domain Name as an OpenID Provider

Saturday, February 21, 2009

Now that OpenID is used by more and more services and websites for authentication, it would probably be a good idea to use your own domain name as an OpenID provider instead of selecting from the many providers like Blogger, AOL, Wordpress.com. Life would be easier with this idea. Someone has put that idea into action. PHPMyID allows you to easily use your domain name for authentication to OpenID-supporting sites like Technorati, Sourceforge, and Skitch.

To use phpMyID (substitute "yourwebsite" with your domain name or website address):

1. Download the archive from the phpMyID website
2. Upload the files to your web server (I chose to put them in an "openid" subfolder)
3. Visit http://yourwebsite/MyID.config.php
4. Make a note of your PHP realm
5. Pick a username and password for phpMyID (remember, with OpenID you authenticate to your provider, and then OpenID sites trust your provider to permit/reject authentication)
6. Create an MD5 hash of your username, password, and PHP realm. Mac and Linux users can just use OpenSSL (echo -n 'username:realm:password' | openssl md5). Windows users will need an MD5 utility
7. Edit your MyID.config.php by entering your chosen username for "auth_username" and the MD5 result from step 6 for the value of "auth_password"
8. Reupload the MyID.config.php file to your web server
9. Visit http://yourwebsite/MyID.config.php and login with your phpMyID username and password to make sure everything is working correctly
10. Place the following HTML tags in the index document for your web site

link rel="openid.server" href="http://yourwebsite/MyID.config.php"
link rel="openid.delegate" href="http://yourwebsite/MyID.config.php"

How To Create Display Ads with Google

Recently I bought a web hosting plan for the online business that I have been planning. Included in the hosting plan are a few dollars worth of Google and Yahoo ads to help start promote whatever business I am planning to run in the website(s) I am building. This is a bonus that came with the package. I haven't claimed the bonus ads yet because my online business is still in the making. I want to make the most out of the bonus ads. I know that this is not much but I want to learn AdWord. So I got interested in Adwords and methods of placing or building ad units that will get people to click it. Luckily I came upon some videos that will help us get a clear look at the process of building display ads using Google AdWords.

Accessing the feature in AdWords in the first place:

How to find templates that are right for you:

How to create ads with no images required:

How to copy ads across ad groups:

Just for Redheads?

Wednesday, February 18, 2009

Online communities are everywhere in the web. Social networks have become a must for anyone who wants to take the internet seriously (and everyone is taking the internet seriously now). The internet is alive with many online communities. I am a member of five online communities and I am still on the look out for new ones, good ones, ones that would make my internet experience more worthwhile. Recently I came upon this social network that only wants redheads as members. Of course I know that I am not a redhead but something in the site hooked my curiousity. What with a line that proudly says : "God Has a Special Pocket in His/Her Slacks For Redheads". Hmmnn... do I like redheads? I think copper-topped girls are somewhat attractive. I looked around in the site and I learned that it's not only for redheads, non-redheads are also welcome to join too as long as they are the ones who "just can't seem to squelch their undying affection for the copper-topped. " Well, I hovered my mouse on the "Join Now!" button, very tempted to click it while eyeing one of the images of the members (very attractive female member named RockinRonda). Did I click the "join now" button or not? It's for you to guess, be a member of the community and see if you find me there.

Is Windows 7 Ahead of Schedule?

There are rumors floating around that Windows 7 Release Candidate 1 has already been built. If these rumors are true, then it would seem like Windows 7 is way ahead of schedule. Softpedia has reported that the latest leak of Window 7 is build 7048.winmain_win7rc1.090211-1625. Notice the inclusion of rc1 in the name. And would you believe if someone says that RC1 will be released on April 2009?

Computers and Cigars

I bet that you think that computers and cigars don't mix but you may be mistaken, cigars and computers could mix. When I say cigar, don't think about cigarettes because the two are not the same. Cigars symbolize success, power, and wealth, whereas cigarettes stand for, well, the multitude of those who are struggling to hit it big someday.

What if you accidentally discover a new niche in the web that proves to be a gold mine and then, overnight, you become the newest dot com millionaire? I guess you'd quit smoking cigarettes and upgrade to having cigars while you surf the net. And of course you'll be buying your supply of cigar online, from Famous-Smoke.com perhaps, because their site has got everything that any cigar loving dot com millionaire wants-- from all major cigar brands to humidors to hygrometers to lighters to ash trays, you name it and they have it.

Yes, computers and cigars could mix well; imagine some cold rainy night spent in front of your computer, you type away on the keyboard as your ideas flow like the rain pouring on your roof, and in between new ideas, you take a puff at your cigar for more inspiration.

What To Do When You Have Registry Errors

Tuesday, February 17, 2009

A recent survey concluded that nine out of ten computers suffer from registry errors at any given point of time. These figures indicate the seriousness of registry errors for a common computer user. It is therefore recommended that every computer user has a basic understanding of the Windows registry. This would help them prevent and fix registry errors themselves.

What is the Registry?

The registry is similar to a cabinet in your office that keeps important files required for normal functioning. In Windows, the registry is basically a database containing vital information about software, hardware and the operating system and is responsible for optimal functioning of your PC. This vital information includes preferences, settings as well as permissions.

The registry is responsible for informing the Windows operating system, software and hardware about the exact location of the resource that will help it execute a specific action. Every time a new software or application is installed, a new entry is added to the registry. Similarly, whenever any application is deleted, related entries are removed from the registry.

What causes Registry Errors?

Your computer keeps referring to the registry as it works. This extensive usage of registry results in its vulnerability to errors associated with it. The most commonly noticed cause of registry errors is related to the un-installation of applications and software. Often these are not uninstalled completely and tend to leave a lot of unnecessary information in the registry. These leftover pieces of redundant information may conflict with the normal functioning of other applications and cause errors.

A lot of malicious software like Trojans and spyware have the potential of adding embedded entries in your registry that not only cause serious computer problems, but may also be tough to remove.

What are the symptoms of Registry Problems?

Some of the common symptoms that you may encounter if you have registry related problems are:

  1. Your PC is very slow to start.

  2. Your PC has a tendency to crash often.

  3. Your computer freezes or shows you a blue screen error.

  4. Many programs fail to start when you run them.

  5. Errors may crop up while installing a new software or application.

  6. Error messages show up without any valid reason.

What are the steps to troubleshoot registry errors?

First you should make sure that the errors are related to the registry. This can be done by eliminating other sources of errors like viruses or an unclean hard disk.

To be able to correct registry related problems, you need to get rid of all invalid or useless information residing in your registry. There are two ways to do this.

The first method is to edit your registry by using the Registry Editor utility provided with your operating system. This however requires a complete knowhow and familiarity with the registry structure as well as expertise in locating erroneous registry entries. You also need to take utmost care to ensure that no other registry entry is touched as it may have serious consequences on the working of your PC.

The second method is to use the services of one of the many reliable registry cleaners that are available online. This method is preferred because:

  1. These registry cleaning software are very easy to use.

  2. They are automatic and take care of cleaning your registry without any problems.

  3. They use algorithms to get rid of registry errors that are very difficult to remove manually

  4. In addition to removing the errors they also improve the performance of your computer by defragmenting the registry.

  5. They also perform the important task of making a backup of the registry that can come in handy in case there is a system failure.

Before making any changes to the registry, you must remember to make a backup. To do this, you may use the Registry Editor or the System Restore Vista tool. You can also use your third-party registry tool to make the backup.

21st Century Rubik's Cube

I was in second grade when Rubik's cube became a craze. I never mastered it but it became one of the most unforgettable toys that ever came out. It was simple yet complex.  Rubik's cube is certainly one of the most clever inventions of the 20th century. Now, in the 21st century, a new Rubik's Cube was launched, this is dubbed as the "first completely electronic, solvable Rubik's Cube." Intrigued? Watch the video to see what I am talking about. Well, it's not yet in stores but soon it will be available.

Free Image Hosting

Bloggers and webmasters always have the need for image hosting sites. Image hosting is as important as the images that make every website, blog, or forum beautiful. In this time of global economic slowdown, it is good to make use of things that are free. There's a new image hosting site that has good features like multiple uploads with one click, easy-to-use interface, automatic image resizing, no banners, fast and reliable servers, unlimited uploads and much more to come (albums, tools, free registration, etc). The site is Pict.com. The site is very easy to use, it allows you to upload your image with just a few clicks. Aside from that, the photo share feature is straightforward; after the upload is complete a box will pop up showing the links that you'd most likely use: the link to use when showing an image to friends; the link to use if you'd want to post the image to boards; the link to use if you want to use the image in your blog; and the direct link to the image itself. And if you have uploaded a number of images, you can share them as an album; all you need to do is scroll down the page and there you will see a link to the album. Pict.com is one of the most straightforward, simple, and easy to use picture hosting sites I have used. and have I mentioned that the uploading with this site is also very fast?

Firefox is Prettier with FoxTab

What makes Firefox hard to dethrone is the fact that every so often a new pretty addon comes up to make it even more beautiful. Now it has another new feature that many would love, especially the ones who like visuals, FoxTab. This addon allows you to cycle through previews of the open tabs you have like the way that Windows Vista and Windows 7's Flip 3D feature allows you to flip through running programs. Now your tabbed browsing can never be prettier with FoxTab. The video above shows this cool new feature.

Monday, February 16, 2009

Okay, everyone loves Twitter but Twitter is not everything there is; it has its weaknesses like sometimes you could not really express what you would like to express because 140 characters is too small a space to paint something too complex.  But thanks to TinyChat, Twitter becomes even more lovely. What is the magic of TinyChat? Well, not much, it just let you create an instant chat room, complete with a short URL that you can use to promote the chatroom on Twitter or other sites. It is very simple and very easy to use. All you have to do is just click a button to create a room and then enter the room or copy the link to share with others. The log of the chat can be saved in a text file and sent to anyone via email. And if you want, you can add TinyChat to you website too.

And Matt Cutts Apologizes on Behalf of Google

By now, everyone in the blogosphere knows that Google Japan was recently found out to be buying blog posts as part of a promotional campaign for a new service. We all know that Google is strictly against paid posting. It is quite surprisingly funny for Google to be caught breaking its own rule, and penalize itself.  Google has no choice but to penalize Google Japan and put its pagerank a few notches lower now. Aside from that, Matt Cutts has to apologize for what happened. Watch the video above for his apology. :)  :)  :)

Paintball Forums

Sunday, February 15, 2009

Online forums are good places to hang out; everyone needs a community to belong to and forums are good places to start friendships and connections. If you enjoy paintball, I guess you would also be interested to know that there is actually a forum where paintball enthusiasts and players could meet online. Yes, there is a paintball forum that has more than six thousand members. I've checked out the forums and I found out that this site could be a real haven for those who love paintball. In the paintball forums members will have access to paintball news, information about paintball tactics and strategies, paintball stores and fields, regional tournaments and leagues, and many other things.

Changing Template

I am on the process of changing the template of this blog. You see that some things are not in place yet. in an hour or two, evrything would be in its place.

How I wish to have the time to really tweak the new template but I don't have time. Really.

Planning a Blog Makeover

Saturday, February 14, 2009

I have been thinking about changing this blog's template because I have learned that it doesn't load quickly and correctly in Internet Explorer. I did not know about this until one of my blogging friends told me about it. I checked it out and sure enough it does not load correctly in IE. I never use IE because it is the slowest browser around so I never knew that my blog's template got a problem with it. And to think that more than half of internet users still use IE, i must do something about this.  I am also thinking about moving from Blogger to WordPress (I have just bought some good hosting package) but I guess it is unlikely because of three reasons: first, I like Blogger despite the many things that it lacks; second, I think I won't have time to spare for doing the move; third, Blogger has sentimental value to me, this is my first blog and I learned to blog with Blogger so I think that it would be good to house my main blog in Blogger forever, I could start many more blogs with WordPress ut my main blog will stay with Blogger.

Are You Taking Advantage of What YoutTube Has To Offer?

Yes, we all know about YouTube, but not everyone knows how to take advantage of what it has to offer. Not everyone also knows that YouTube is the 2nd largest search engine and the 4th largest web property. Here's a video of an interview of YouTube Product Manager Matt Liu who made some really good points on how to take advantage of what YouTube has to offer.

Free WordPress Themes

While searching the web for premium WordPress themes to use in the new blogs I am starting, I came upon FTL WordPress Themes, a website that gives away for free wordpress themes. I am very picky when it comes to choosing theme but this site impressed me. They have these free beautiful themes that would cost you from $60 to $90 in other sites. I am a sucker for freebies so I downloaded all the themes I liked from the site. I checked out who is behind the site and i learned that they have some great designers and expert Wordpress coders who work together to bring out some outstanding themes for free.

Before you dive into buying anything from the internet, check out all corners, you might find out that you can get them for free, just like the themes from FTL WordPress themes.

What Will Become of Blogging in 2009?

"Not enough money. Too many haters. A waste of time and energy. All hype no delivery."

The above are the reasons given by some A-list bloggers who are quitting the blogosphere. If you know TechCrunch, you'd be surprised to know that, Mike Arrington, the man behind it is taking some time off from blogging.  And the Newsweek writer who gained fame from his The Secret Diary of Steve Jobs blog, Dan Lyons, is also quitting.  Read more about this here and here

What do you think? Is blogging losing its glow?

Content Technology Solutions

Sunday, February 8, 2009

There are many things that organizations and companies need to maintain in order for them to stay in top form. It could be something that represents them and make them visible to the rest world, like a website or a web content management portal. But it's not only a website that is needed, a sound asset management and a system that could constituent elements of an otherwise disconnected parts of the whole organization is also needed. Whether its a book publishing firm, a medical center, a museum, a news agency, or a financial institution, a content management system is always needed because the people involved in these kind of companies are more on marketing and delivering their content, it would be too tasking on their part to add to their responsibility the IT side of things. That is why a company that provides solutions to content and digital asset management is needed.

I came upon DatabasePublish.com, a company that provides solutions like content management systems and digital asset management systems. Based on what I have seen in their website, they could be what your company is looking for. Their portfolio shows that they have a wide experience in digital asset management and content management systems and even those that are related to custom development, multi-channel systems, workflow management, and semantic technologies. They have helped companies and organizations grow and make the most out of their content in printed and digital form.

Collection of Windows Tricks (Part 3)

Every time I stumble upon a Windows tip or trick I keep it. Through time I have accumulated quite a number of Windows tricks. Note that these are not my own tricks, I owe them to different people who are good at discovering good tricks. I want to share them with you, so here they are, the second batch. (If you missed the first batch, just click HERE.

The Ultimate Appearance Tweak

Microsoft said: "You can connect up to 10 monitors to your Windows XP-based computer and display numerous programs or windows at one time. You can use your mouse to move items from one monitor to another. You can open a different file on each monitor. Or several. Or you can stretch one item across several monitors; so for example, you can see more columns in a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet, or the entire layout of a Web page, without scrolling." Consider it. Monitors and PCI video cards are pretty cheap now. Windows recognizes the addition & allows easy adjustments on the 'Display Properties/Settings' menu.

Save Streaming Medi

It's cool to listen to MP3s (or watch movies) over the Internet. Often, saving this media, however, seems impossible. Hey, if it plays on your computer, it's on your hard drive. Once the file is fully loaded and with folder view set to show hidden and systems folders, searches for the media (.mp3 or .mpg). There it is!

Securing the Paging File

If you're truly concerned about the possibility of your computer falling into the wrong hands, you should be sure that you don't leave any tracks in the paging file. By default, when you shut down your system, the paging file remains intact. People who've access to your computer could conceivably look through the unencrypted paging file to find information they shouldn't have.

Assign a Keyboard Shortcut

Click in the Shortcut Key field and press a keyboard combination that you want to use for launching or switching to this program. The shortcut key you assign must consist of one character key (a letter, number, or symbol) plus at least two of the following three keys: Ctrl, Alt, and Shift. (If you press a character key only, Windows automatically adds Ctrl+Alt.)

Shortcut keys work only when assigned to a program shortcut on the Start menu, the Programs menu, or the Desktop. The shortcuts you define will not work if it conflicts with a combination used in the program whose window has the focus.

We are always on the look out for freebies in the internet because nothing is sweeter than something that's free. Well, I came upon Free-Movies-and-Music.com, a site that allows you to download free music, movies, software, games, and many more. All you need to do to get started is fill out this form - and you could be downloading in just minutes! What ever music you're looking for, this is the place to find it. PHP Powerhouse

When I dived into serious blogging a few months ago, I was armed only with some basic knowledge  of  HTML, JavaScript, and sentence and paragraph construction. That was all that I needed then. As I get deeper and deeper into this internet thing the necessity of learning more becomes apparent. Just like now that I am tweaking my wife's online store (that is now long overdue to be up) which uses the WordPress blogging platform, I feel the need for more knowledge of PHP. To be able to effectively tweak WordPress blog, and to turn it into an ecommerce website, I must have a good enough background in PHP. Aside from that, I know that learning PHP will enable me to open more doors for me in the internet. With PHP in my hands I would be able to create great websites. There is absolutely no comparison between a website that is PHP driven and a Static HTML driven website, period! PHP driven sites load faster, they are more search engine friendly. Because I want to learn PHP I searched the web for affordable courses. I found a very good one that really fits me. I don't have much time to really study and pour a lot of time in learning something new because my day job is somewhat demanding and it often leaves me too tired to concentrate for study at night.  PHP Powerhouse is a course that best fits people who are willing to learn PHP but do not have time to spare for long study.

What you will learn in a mere three hours with PHP Powerhouse will change your perspective on site development. You will become more vitalized when it comes to maintaining and expanding your sites! You will be more encouraged to add more content to your sites simply because the hum-drum arduous task of menu changes and the like will become a thing of the past. I am convinced that every Internet Marketer needs to be building their sites with PHP.

AdSense Advice from ProBlogger

Darren Rowse, the guy behind Problogger.net, has some Adsense advice for us that is easy to remember because it is only one word. Yes, just one word : experiment. But of course it is not just that, he's got a lot to say like "There's usually a 'tipping point' where you hit a ceiling of how many ads your users will accept -- push it too far and you could hurt reader engagement, traffic, and in the long run your earnings. On the flip side of this, don't be afraid to have more than one or two ads on a page, particularly if you have long pages with lots of content." Just watch the video for more of what he has to say, but remember, just experiment :)

Google's Eye Tracking Research

Google conducted a research on the way the eyes of the user move around the SERP. It is important for Google to know where eyeballs go on a search result page. In a post in The Oficial Google Blog about the results of the study, User Experience Researchers Anne Aula and Kerry Rodden have the following words: "Based on eye-tracking studies, we know that people tend to scan the search results in order. They start from the first result and continue down the list until they find a result they consider helpful and click it — or until they decide to refine their query. The heatmap below shows the activity of 34 usability study participants scanning a typical Google results page. The darker the pattern, the more time they spent looking at that part of the page. This pattern suggests that the order in which Google returned the results was successful; most users found what they were looking for among the first two results and they never needed to go further down the page."

Google is conducting similar eye tracking tests with image search and Google News.

Friday, February 6, 2009

In 2008 the power of social networks was really felt. Social networks have changed the the internet. Now social networks have become essential to the web. Facebook Can Cause Depression According to Research

I just stumbled upon this news article which hooked my interest. I have a Facebook account but I don't think it has ill efects on me. Here's the news :

A new study performed at Stony Brook University in New York has found that excessive social networking cause symptoms associated with depression in teenage girls. Easy access to text messaging, email and websites such as Facebook makes matters worse

Excessive discussion, or co-rumination, allows teen girls to hold repeated conversations about romantic disappointment which worsen their mood and create negative emotions. Teenage boys have less of a problem due to less time spent on personal issues

Discussion is a good way to handle problems such as romantic disappointment, but it is believed that teen girls do not have the problem-solving skills to deal with troubles constructively. The girls don't realize that it will make them feel worse.

Yahoo's Answer to Google's Personalized Search

Thursday, February 5, 2009

Yahoo has got a new feature called Search Pad a note taking application built into Yahoo! Search  and keeps track of your searches, figures out when you are researching things, and stores results of interest in a virtual notepad you can use for reference. Search Pad is "helpful in completing tasks and making decisions that require collecting information over multiple search sessions such as making a large purchase, planning a vacation or gathering information on a health issue."

Search Pad is still being tested and will be available to the public in a few months.

When eBanking Gives You a Migraine

Last week (that was friday) I went to the Unionbank branch in our place to fix the problem with my Eon Cyber account. I had a post about this problem last week. Unionbank guy who talked to me asked for my email and told me that he will just email the head office about my problem and the head office will just contact me via email. When monday came I called the bank and asked for the guy I haved talked to. When he was on the phone I told him that perheps it would be good if I give him my account number and credit card number so that it would be easier for the head office to check things out. He took my account number and card number and told me to just check my email every now and then. After three days of checking without seeingany action from their end, I called the bank again but this thime the phone just keep on ringing and no one answers it. I tried to call many times but no one answers the phone. I felt kind of shitty. It pissed me off. So there is a need for me to go to the bank again and talk with them about my account. This is really bad.

Collection of Windows Tricks (Part 2)

Every time I stumble upon a Windows tip or trick I keep it. Through time I have accumulated quite a number of Windows tricks. Note that these are not my own tricks, I owe them to different people who are good at discovering good tricks. I want to share them with you, so here they are, the second batch. (If you missed the first batch, just click here.)

Rename multiple files at once

You can rename loads of files at once in Windows Explorer. Highlight a set of files in a window, then right click on one and rename it. All the other files will be renamed to that name, with individual numbers in brackets to distinguish them. Also, in a folder you can arrange icons in alphabetized groups by View, Arrange Icon By... Show In-Groups.

Show cover art in Media Player

Windows Media Player will display the cover art for albums as it plays the tracks -- if it found the picture on the Internet when you copied the tracks from the CD. If it didn't, or if you have lots of pre-WMP music files, you can put your own copy of the cover art in the same directory as the tracks. Just call it folder.jpg and Windows Media Player will pick it up and display it.

Display Hibernate Option on the Shut Down dialog

For some reason, Hibernate isn't available from the default Shut Down dialog. But you can enable it simply enough, by holding down the SHIFT key while the dialog is visible. Now you see it, now you don't!

Enable ClearType on the Welcome Screen!

As laptop users and other LCD owners are quickly realizing, Microsoft's ClearType technology in Windows XP really makes a big difference for readability. But the this feature is enabled on a per-user basis in Windows XP, so you can't see the effect on the Welcome screen; it only appears after you logon.

But you can fix that. Fire up the Registry Editor and look for the following keys:

(default user) HKEY_USERS \ .Default \ Control Panel \ Desktop \
FontSmoothing (String Value)
HKEY_USERS \ .Default \ Control Panel \ Desktop \
FontSmoothingType (Hexadecimal DWORD Value)

Make sure both of these values are set to 2 and you'll have ClearType enabled on the Welcome screen and on each new user by default.

Change User Picture

Click on the Icon at the top of the start menu. Select desired picture from resulting screen Windows 2000 style logon. To revert back to the Win2k style logon so you can log on as the administrator and other options, press ctrl+alt+delete twice at the logon screen. Change the location of the My Music or My Pictures folders:

In Windows 2000, Microsoft added the ability to right-click the My Documents folder and choose a new location for that folder in the shell. With Windows XP, Microsoft has elevated the My Music and My Pictures folders to the same "special shell folder" status of My Documents, but they never added a similar (and simple) method for changing those folder's locations. However, it is actually pretty easy to change the location of these folders, using the following method.

Open a My Computer window and navigate to the location where you'd like My Music (or My Pictures) to reside. Then, open the My Documents folder in a different window. Drag the My Music (or My Pictures) folder to the other window, and Windows XP will update all of the references to that folder to the new location, including the Start menu.

Protect Your Files From Unauthorized Users

Other users with permission to delete a file (users with Modify or Full Control permission) can't use your encrypted files-but they can make them difficult for you to use. Any such user can rename your files, which can make them difficult to find, and can also delete your files. (Even if the user merely deletes them to the Recycle Bin and doesn't remove them altogether, the deleted files are unavailable to you because you don't have access to any other user's Recycle Bin.) Therefore, if you're concerned about protecting your files from other authorized users as well as from a thief who steals your computer, you should modify the NTFS permissions to prevent any type of modification by other users.

Shutdown Your System in a Hurry

If you need to shut down in a hurry-or if a frozen application prevents you from shutting down in the normal ways-you can use the following procedure. Be aware, however, that you won't get an opportunity to save open documents. To perform an emergency shutdown, press Ctrl+Alt+Del to display Task Manager. Open the Shut down menu and hold down the Ctrl key as you click the Turn Off command. Poof! If your computer is part of a domain, the procedure is similar. Press Ctrl+Alt+Del and then hold down Ctrl when you click Shut Down. In this situation, you'll get a warning message pointing out-quite correctly-that this should be used only as a last resort.

Provide Personal Support

It never fails: when friends, co-workers, or family members discover that you're a Windows expert, you get pressed into service as an unpaid support technician. If the party asking for help is running any edition of Windows XP and has an active Internet connection, your job is much easier. Have the other person send you a Remote Assistance request; when you accept the request, you connect directly to their computer and can edit Registry settings, fix file associations, set System options, and perform just about any other troubleshooting or repair task, just as if you were sitting at the other person's desk.

Quickly Fix Connectivity Problems

Are you having trouble connecting to other computers on your local area network? If your network uses a hardware firewall that assigns IP addresses to each machine and you're certain you've configured all other components correctly, check to see whether the Internet Connection Firewall is enabled. That component can effectively block communication between PCs on the network.

Hack IE Title Bar

This can be an impressive bit of personalization. Use your name or moniker to brand Internet Explorer. Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\ and left-click on Main to change the string "Window Title" to whatever you wish.

Unload DLLs

To prevent Windows from caching DLLs after the program using them has closed, follow this procedure: Navigate to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ then left-click on Explorer. Right-click (as above) and create the DWORD

AlwaysUnloadDLL with a value of 1. This requires a reboot to take effect. This will allow memory to be used more efficiently.

Registry Hacks

Editing the Windows Registry, while much more common now than in years past, is still not to be entered into lightly. You can break Windows, cause boot failure. I know you're gonna do it anyway; why else would you be reading this. Just be careful, OK?

These are few because, for the most part WinXP can be customized through the interlace or with third-party freeware (as above).

All of the tips below require running regedit. To do so, hit 'Start/Run' then type 'regedit' and follow the instructions.

Naturally, I take no responsibility for any damage or loss of data incurred in the remote possibility that something goes terribly wrong.

And They are SongSmithing Away Your Good Old Classics

Sunday, February 1, 2009

Does this version of Radiohead's Creep creeps you out? Well, that's the power of Microsoft SongSmith. If you will just read the description of the software on its website you will not be inspired, what with something that goes like this: "Songsmith generates musical accompaniment to match a singer’s voice. Just choose a musical style, sing into your PC’s microphone, and Songsmith will create backing music for you. Then share your songs with your friends and family, post your songs online, or create your own music videos."But try watching classic music videos on Youtube that have got the songsmith treatment and I bet that you'll start thinking about abusing your favorite classic.

Capturing Moments

Capturing moments and events has never been easier with the advent of digital photography. Digital photography has changed the way we view the world. Ordinary people like you and me now have the power to record little moment, common things, and common happenings that could turn out big and awesome on our computer screens. Now that digital cameras have become cheaper and cheaper more and more people could tap at the innate photographer in them. With a digital camera, all one needs to have is the "eye" for the right moment to click on the shutter and record something that could turn out to be a treasure.

I did not realize the power of the human eye for perfect moments until I came upon some awesome photo stumbles on StumbleUpon. 42ndStreetPhoto is a StumbleUpon page by 34 year old single guy from New York, New York, USA named Chris. In that page he has an awesome collection or stumbles of photographs from all over the web. Browsing through his page is like having a journey into another world even if the images were all taken in our world. You'll be amazed at how photography could change one's view of the world. Check out his page now and see what I mean.

Collection of Windows Tricks (Part 1)

Every time I stumble upon a Windows tip or trick I keep it. Through time I have accumulated quite a number of Windows tricks. Note that these are not my own tricks, I owe them to different people who are good at discovering good tricks. I want to share them with you, so here they are, the first batch :

Lock XP Workstation

You can lock your XP workstation with two clicks of the mouse. Create a new shortcut on your desktop using a right mouse click, and enter 'rundll32.exe user32.dll, LockWorkStation' in the location field. Give the shortcut a name you like. That's it -- just double click on it and your computer will be locked. And if that's not easy enough, Windows key + L will do the same.

Remove Windows XP system software

XP hides some system software you might want to remove, such as Windows Messenger, but you can tickle it and make it disgorge everything. Using Notepad or Edit, edit the text file /windows/inf/sysoc.inf, search for the word 'hide' and remove it. You can then go to the Add or Remove Programs in the Control Panel, select Add/Remove Windows Components and there will be your prey, exposed and vulnerable.

New commands

For those skilled in the art of DOS batch files, XP has a number of interesting new commands. These include 'eventcreate' and 'eventtriggers' for creating and watching system events, 'typeperf' for monitoring performance of various subsystems, and 'schtasks' for handling scheduled tasks. As usual, typing the command name followed by /? will give a list of options -- they're all far too baroque to go into here.

Windows XP supports IPv6

XP has IP version 6 support -- the next generation of IP. Unfortunately this is more than your ISP has, so you can only experiment with this on your LAN. Type 'ipv6 install' into Run... (it's OK, it won't ruin your existing network setup) and then 'ipv6 /?' at the command line to find out more. If you don't know what IPv6 is, don't worry and don't bother.

Kill tasks from the command line

You can at last get rid of tasks on the computer from the command line by using 'taskkill /pid' and the task number, or just 'tskill' and the process number. Find that out by typing 'tasklist', which will also tell you a lot about what's going on in your system.

Enable ClearType by default

XP has ClearType -- Microsoft's anti-aliasing font display technology-- but doesn't have it enabled by default. It's well worth trying, especially if you were there for DOS and all those years of staring at a screen have given you the eyes of an astigmatic bat. To enable ClearType, right click on the desktop, select Properties, Appearance, Effects, select ClearType from the second drop-down menu and enable the selection. Expect best results on laptop displays. If you want to use ClearType on the Welcome login screen as well, set the registry entry

HKEY_USERS/.DEFAULT/ControlPanel/Desktop/FontSmoothingType to 2.

Run program as different user

You can run a program as a different user without logging out and back in again. Right click the icon, select Run As... and enter the user name and password you want to use. This only applies for that run. The trick is particularly useful if you need to have administrative permissions to install a program, which many require. Note that you can have some fun by running programs multiple times on the same system as different users, but this can have unforeseen effects.

Speed up the Start Menu

The Start Menu can be leisurely when it decides to appear, but you can speed things along by changing the registry entry HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Control Panel/Desktop/MenuShowDelay from the default 400 to something a little snappier. Like 0.
